Zionism is the Jewish people's right to self-determination in parts of their ancestral homeland — the belief that Jews, like every other people, deserve to live in safety and freedom. First articulated by Natan Birnbaum and then Theodor Herzl in the late 19th century, it grew into the national liberation movement that led to the reestablishment of Israel in 1948. Simply put, Zionism is Israel's right to exist.
