Antisemitism was ignored because it felt contained. New York shows the cost of that lie. For far too long, the silent majority have justified their indifference with a moral sleight of hand: as long as it was only the Jews under threat, they could look the other way. Heads buried, voices muted, discomfort deferred. Antisemitism was framed as an ugly but contained problem, regrettable, yes, but safely siloed within a community that history had conditioned them to believe would somehow endure it. That excuse has finally collapsed.
